Plant Description :

Gymnema has played an important role in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, most notably to control blood sugar. Chewing the leaves destroys the ability to identify the sweet taste, giving it the common Hindi name of gurmar, or "sugar destroyer." Gymnema is used for diabetes, metabolic syndrome, weight loss, and cough. It is also used for malaria and as a snake bite antidote, digestive stimulant, laxative, appetite suppressant, and diuretic.

Gymnema contains substances that decrease the absorption of sugar from the intestine. Gymnema may also increase the amount of insulin in the body and increase the growth of cells in the pancreas, which is the place in the body where insulin is made.

Clinical studies investigating diabetes have typically used 200 or 400 mg extract daily, standardized to contain 25% gymnemic acids.
