Succinic acid is a white, odorless solid. As an aqueous solution, it ionizes to anions called succinate, which plays a role in the citric acid cycle, an energy-yielding process in all living organisms. The name derives from Latin succinum, meaning amber, from which the acid may be obtained.
Succinate or succinic acid is involved in several chemical processes in the body. In supplements, it is used for symptoms related to menopause such as hot flashes and irritability.
Succinate is also applied to the skin for arthritis and joint pain.
